Toy Story 2
In a nutshell: The smashing sequel to the original computer
animated film that started it all. This time around, Woody is toy-napped by a
greedy collector, so it’s up to Buzz and the gang to rescue the cowboy and get
him back to the room before Andy returns from camp.
What was different/original about
it? Given this
was still the early days of computer animated films, expectations and
standards weren't as high as they are today. Originally, “Toy Story
2” was destined for direct-to-video, but Pixar pushed for a theatrical release.
The production was a challenge, but they pulled it off and
this installment confirmed the myth that sometimes, sequels could
equal and even surpass the original.
How did it change movies? Showing the world that lightning could strike
twice, Pixar went into production overhaul, releasing a film every other year
and delivering a slew of classic animated features, i.e. “Finding Nemo”, “The
Incredible’s”, “Up”, etc. Other studios jumped on the band-wagon as well, and
since Toy Story, almost 100 computer-animated films have been made and released
just in theatres alone. Almost every A-list actor has lent their voice to at
least one animated feature, and have cashed in well, essentially just for
reading lines into a microphone.
