The Matrix
In a nutshell: A lonely computer hacker makes contact with an
elusive man, who informs him he is “The One”. Thomas A. Andersen then becomes Neo, and discovers first hand that the
world he lives in isn’t real. Taken under the wing of the wise and mighty
Morpheus, Neo learns how to defy the rules of reality and fight against the
machine race who want to destroy mankind.
What was different/original about
it? Where do I
begin? “The Matrix” came out of nowhere in 1999 to show audiences a world
within a world where anything was possible. This journey was made all the more
believable by the cutting-edge special effects, never seen on screen before. It
was a smart, sophisticated and stylish blend of action, adventure,
science-fiction, mystery and imagination. It introduced the technology of
“bullet-time”, which could slow down the action on screen in such a convincing
way, we could experience the full-impact of its intensity.
How did it change movies? In soooooo many ways. After The Matrix, almost
every action movie, TV commercial and music video stole the slow-mo
“bullet-time” effect to heighten and exciten their action scenes. It made
trench coats cool again and led future science-fiction movies to question our
own reality and re-think what was possible. It paved the way for high-concept
action/sci-fi movies such as "Equilibrium" and “Inception”.
