Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom
Menace
In a nutshell: Twenty-two years before this was released, the
world was galvanized by the original “Star Wars”. Surely audiences must have
been confused when the infamous “ credits crawl” at the start of the film said
Episode IV: A New Hope… hang on!
This was a new movie. Where were the previous three installments
Aha, they hadn't been made yet. George Lucas cleverly envisioned the
three preceding stories would be told another day. Thus, Episode 1: The Phantom
Menace was made.
What was different/original about
it? It was the
first prequel to ever be made. It took viewers back to where all the events
from the original Star Wars trilogy originated from, i.e. the discovery of
Anakin Skywalker, his training by Obi Wan Kenobi, the fall of the Jedi’s, the
rise of the Empire and Anakin’s transition from Jedi to Darth Vader. Episode 1
introduced Star Wars to a whole new generation, and for those of us who only
saw the first three films on home video, we got the chance to experience light
sabre battles, x-wing fights in space and Yoda on the big screen for the first
time. Over the next six years, two more prequels rolled out and led directly
into the beginning of A New Hope, completing the full circle.
How did it change movies? It invented the prequel, and brought trilogies
back to the limelight. It harnessed several new technologies and pushed the
special effects envelope further and further. Episode 2: Attack of the Clones
was one of the first feature length films to be shot entirely on digital video
technology, resulting in the slow demise of film technology. Movies have never looked
clearer, sharper and more defined in their picture quality since. George Lucas
did so well from his baby, he went on to build a phenomenally successful film
studio, and recently sold off the rights to the Star Wars franchise to the next
generation of filmmakers. And the stories of the Star Wars
Universe aren't over yet; earlier this year, it was announced a new
trilogy – Episodes 7,8 & 9 – would be made, with the first due for release
in 2015.
