Ed TV
In a nutshell: A TV network is experiencing
low ratings, so comes up with a new idea to bring back the viewers; find an
ordinary guy, stick cameras in his face 24/7 and broadcast his life to the
world. It starts off slow, but soon takes off in a huge way, triggering off the
worlds’ fascination with watching another person live their life on television
– with nothing off limits.
What was different/original about
it? The year
before this, “The Truman Show” came along and was the first film to really
address the concept of reality television. Whereas in that story,
Truman didn't know he was a star. But Ed does, and he laps it up.
Before reality TV became the massive phenomenon it is today, Ed TV hinted at is
potential popularity, and made viewers realize there was an obsession
brewing under the surface they didn't even know they wanted yet.
How did it change movies? I wouldn't say it changed movies as
much as it was the pre-cursor for reality TV. But reality TV has certainly
impacted the movies; remember that song from the 80’s, “Video Killed the Radio
Star”?. Then a few years back, Robbie Williams released an album called
“Reality Killed the Video Star”? Reality TV has certainly stolen some of the
movies thunder, but alas, movies are now back; bigger, better and brasher than
ever. I prefer movies over TV myself, in case you hadn't guessed that
;-)
